Recent Projects in Pest Management

Several Doctoral students are funded by the main forestry companies in New Zealand, Carter Holt Harvey, Fletcher Challenge, Rayonier New Zealand, Timberlands West Coast Ltd., Contributions to some of FRASS projects also come from AgResearch, and Crop Care.

We have been successful in garnering support from private industry and several government ministers in addressing educational and training issues in New zealand in many technology areas.

FRASS has compiled Pest and Disease Contingency Plans for some of the major companies in New Zealand.

FRASS attends in-house meetings with the main forestry companies to transfer technology to field personnel and forest managers. This is a continuing service we provide for the forestry sector.

NZ Farm Forestry Association have contracted FRASS to carry out a programme investigating the possibilities for biocontrol agents of recently introduced pests.

We have published a series of articles in the New Zealand Tree Grower concerning forest health and biosecurity issues. This series has been in progress since 1995 and is continuing.

We provide technical advice and training to Farm Foresters.

This year (1998/99) We have been instrumental in saving several hundred hectares of Eucalyptus forest from a suite of tree killing pests in Northland New Zealand. Wehave trained several   estate workers and consultants in the techniques we developed for these multiple pest problems. This reduces the cost to the private forester over time.

We carry out surveys of areas of conservation interest and recently published a substantial document on indicator species paid for by the New Zealand Department of conservation
